The Sacrifice

Shadows crept across the wall. The rusty, orange planks moaned above her. Melanie’s heartbeats quickened and sweat dripped down her cheek. She clamped her hand over her mouth to silence her asthmatic breathing.

“She’s in here. I can feel it. Go around back and wait while we flush her out,” the male voice said.

Several feet ran close to her hiding place and she held her breath, closing her eyes. The moldy, damp smell crept up her nostrils and a small creature scurried over her sandaled toes, but her life depended on her silence. She wrapped her arms around her knees, pulling them across the dirt space hidden under the stairs.

“Melanie? Where for art thou Melanie?” the man beckoned. “Come out and play with us.”

She squeezed her hand and blood dripped from the fresh wound. His knife had cut deep.

The front door crashed open and clicks echoed on the wood floor. “Where is she? The elders are waiting.” An irritated young, female voice asked. “Must I do everything?”

The unknown woman inhaled, sniffing in short bursts.

Tapping heals slowly moved through the old house, nearing the stairs. The small, crawl space door creaked opened and everything faded.

The Challenge was:

Write a short story/flash fiction story in 200 words or less, excluding the title. It can be in any format, including a poem. Begin the story with the words, “Shadows crept across the wall”. These five words will be included in the word count.

If you want to give yourself an added challenge (optional), do one or more of these:

-end the story with the words: "everything faded." (also included in the word count)
-include the word "orange" in the story
-write in the same genre you normally write
-make your story 200 words exactly!

Sorry I've been absent around the blogosphere lately. I've had a hectic couple of weeks with a death in the family. The memorial is tomorrow, so I'm hoping things will settle soon after. I can't wait to pop over and read some great flash fiction.

Here is the question(s): When and how did you first become a writer? How did it all begin? What are your writing origins?

I wrote my first book in high school. It was a memoir, because at that age, I knew everything and had experienced everything, of course (everything consisted of every romantic problem with boys). I sat under my backyard gazebo and wrote whatever was on my mind. I thought I was clever.

I didn't really get into fiction until after high school when I would read and daydream about alternate universes and superheros. I started to write dribble here and there, beginning with the bizarre dreams and escalating into stories. I'm well into my thirties now, and my writing has taken on new meaning. My characters are more persistent and my stories are more fantastical.

So, that is how my writing journey began. One girl, under the South Florida sun of her gazebo writing all of her worries down for no one to ever see.

I can't wait to read everyone else's origin stories.

Emotional Flash Fiction - I'm Hearing Voices Blogfest!

Here is my emotional flash fiction piece:

Keera’s father, Satton, watched her, a prisoner, on the other side of his adversary.

“Stop this!” Keera’s shaky hands cupped her face. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she viewed the butchery below in the dirt arena. The half man, half beast lay wounded as the armed slaves stalked toward him. They readied their spears to finish him.

She turned to see her father staring at her. His chubby face drooped, the sparkle in his dull, brown eyes no longer visible.

“Zlinic!” Satton yelled; the scientists and Zlinic snapped their attention to him. “I’m not going to be used against my daughter any longer.” His eyes met Keera once more. “I’m sorry.” He climbed the short wall and jumped into the arena before anyone had the chance to stop him.

Keera gripped the stone edge. “No!” Her hand reached into air, but she could only watch helplessly while her father plummeted to his death.

The scientists and Zlinic fled the observation deck, knowing the danger they were now in, but Keera’s focus was on the floor below. Her breathing became shorter, disturbed by the sobs inching up her throat. Both of her parents had forfeited their lives because of her.

The beautiful and wonderful Kathleen Doyle at Writing, Reading, and Life tagged me in an 11 question meme. After I finish answering her questions, I'm to develop 11 more questions for 11 more bloggers. I'll try my best.

Here are the questions and my answers:

1. On average, how often do you look in a mirror (practicing faces for your writing does count!)? Honestly, I hate mirrors, so I would average a total of 1-2 minutes per day. Enough time to fix my hair before work and that's it. My daughter, on the other hand, poses in front of her mirror, takes pictures and posts them on Facebook.

2. What is your weirdest/strangest/most interesting habit? Be honest! My weirdest habit would be me fiddling under my neck when I'm nervous. I don't know when I started or why, but there you have it.

3. If you could go anywhere in the UNIVERSE, where would it be and why? (Fictional places are totally part of the universe.) I'd love to travel to the planet they recently dubbed Super Earth. I'd love to see other forms of life out there, if in fact they exist.

4. What fictional character do you hate with a passion? Don't hate me, but I never really liked Pinocchio.

5. Upon landing on a deserted tropical island, you realize you have only one thing to help you survive! What is it? An endless supply of notebooks and pens. I couldn't survive without writing.

6. What do you hoard collect? I collect jewelry, but I don't wear it.

7. You’ve just landed on a brand new, never before discovered planet. What do you name it? Planet Utopia! Especially if there's no men there. (Kidding)
8. Fill in the blank: I am proud of myself for never giving up on a goal or dream.

9. You have half an hour to cook a meal for your family/friends/people. What do you make? Spaghetti

10. You’ve just been asked to give an impromptu speech on any subject. What do you talk about? Always following your dreams and never giving up. I tend to preach on the subject from time to time.

11. Is there life beyond our planet? Absolutely!

Dialogue Introduction - I'm Hearing Voices Blogfest!

Here is a dialogue introduction of two of my characters (It's more of a trait related introduction piece):

“This is Keera. She is an emotionally challenged person.” Caleaha said.

“Emotionally challenged?” Keera asked. “What do you mean by that? I am not emotionally challenged.”

“Oh, sorry, excuse me.” Caleaha continued, “Emotionally unavailable.”

“At least I’m not a leech, attached to every male on the planet. You have two for everyday of the week.” Keera replied.

“Ouch. That was harsh. Did I forget to mention egotistical, thoughtless and cruel?”

“Cruel? And what has been done to me isn’t cruel? They all deserved their fate.”

“You weren’t always like that. You were kind and compassionate at one time. I just never thought you’d turn out to be that kind of person. So hard and uncaring.”

“Caleaha, would you have turned out so different had our roles been reversed?” Keera asked.

“I’d have done things differently, but then again, we are two very different people.”

“Yes, obsessed with boys, your sun-colored hair and endless social parties. We are very different.”

“You have nothing nice to say about me? Was I not a loyal friend to you?” Caleaha asked.

“I’m sorry. My defenses are up. Yes, you were a very loyal friend to me and my sister.”

“It’s the one thing we had in common. Our loyalty. I suppose anyone thrust in similar situations would have had loyalty tested.” Caleaha said. “Tell me…was it my death that tested your more favorable traits?”

“Caleaha, killing you changed everything.”

Characters on the Couch - I'm Hearing Voices Blogfest

Thank you to Angiela Cothran and Cassie Mae for hosting this blogfest. Here is the first post in which one character answers the following questions:

1. What is your biggest vulnerability? Do others know this or is it a secret?

Keera’s reply: At one time I would have answered this question entirely different. I would have said it was a dark and dreary day. Selfish? Perhaps, but it’s the truth. Now, it’s the one thing that once brightened my day that is my biggest vulnerability, that and the threat of my loved ones being hurt. A few select others know of my secret. They have secrets of their own and would never tell another soul.

2. What do people believe about you that is false?

Keera’s reply: That I am a monster; someone to fear, because I am different from others.

3. What would your best friend say is your fatal flaw? Why?

Keera’s reply: Trusting others. She would have perhaps seen right through them, but then again, she was placed in the same predicament I was.

4. What would the same friend say is your one redeeming quality? Why?

Keera’s reply: Compassion. I did what I needed to do in order to save her from a more devastating outcome.

5. What do you want most? What will you do to get it?

Keera’s reply: I want things to have been how I once thought they were. I want the war to be over. I want freedom to those who were taken and changed. Although I can’t have my life back, I’d do whatever it takes to see others receive theirs back. I’ll finish the war. ''

Note: Keera is my main character, a teenage girl who lives through extraordinary circumstances.

Trapped in My Fantasy Worlds

Did you ever look back and ask yourself, "Did I really do that or is it one of the fantasy stories I've made up in my head?"

Surely, I wasn't that strong, mean two year old who pushed over her brother's crib with him in it; or the stubborn teenager who left her brothers at the tennis court because she was angry one of them beat her. Nor could I have been the conniving girl who set up a rival with an ex only to win in the game of love.

Those stories must belong to another person, because I was an angel who made the honor roll every year and graduated at the top of the class from Harvard. Writing a best seller was a piece of cake. Every agent I queried wanted to represent me, and the publishers went to war with one another over my manuscript.

Are you laughing? What? Are you saying that's not my reality? That may explain why I'm in an office looking at other's financial statements all day then. Damn!

Do you daydream and imagine an alternative life? Are you a superhero? The next big writer that sold a million copies? Winning the Nobel Peace Prize?

Daydreaming is healthy. There is nothing wrong with exercising your imagination. I don't daydream because I'm unhappy with my situation. I'm very happy with the person I am and all those crazy things I've done has led me to who I am today.

I imagine great things and great people who overcome obstacles. It's my form of entertainment.

NyQuil is My Friend!

I've been sick...all week. I must have picked up a virus somewhere. Perhaps it was at Chick-Fil-A when the girl at the counter told another patron she was fighting off a cold. I knew I shouldn't have eaten that darn food. Why do I crave that chicken? I think it's drugged with an addicting substance. I swear it.

So, yes, I couldn't have survived without NyQuil this week. Makes me wonder how people survived before NyQuil.

Instead of cleaning, catching up on the housework, which is extremely needed, I left the stinky house and came to the library to get caught up on things. I read through some blogs and plan to write some. My writing comes first, what can I say. I also temporarily ungrounded my son and kicked him out of the house this morning. My daughter is now sick and I wanted to spare him, if possible.

That's been my exciting week. How was yours? Enjoy my young son's display of dancing. He was two or three at the time. Good dancing runs in the family.

Fun in Miami and a Search for Fascinating Females

Yesterday, my daughter and I had the privilege of meeting Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler in Coral Gables. We had a fabulous time and they were, by far, two of the best speakers we've heard. They were comical and extremely nice to talk with.

It was a great time.

On another fun note, you know you're in South Beach when...

You see a very confident man bicycle in his thong bikini. I couldn't help but snap this picture when we were passing by. We later saw him walking around South Beach with his bike. This made me think of confidence, and not caring what anyone else thinks whatsoever.

Do you have this kind of confidence in your writing? Can you just let your guard down and showcase what you have to offer? It doesn't just resonate with writing, but anything really.

Truth be told, I don't have this type of confidence. I do care what others think and sometimes it does hold me back. Do you find your lack of confidence holding you back? I say, let it go. Live in the moment and take chances every once in a while. I admire this man. He may be different, but that is what I admire about him.

February 10th - Friday - Emotion Flash Fiction: Emotion is the engine of a story. Pick an emotion and in a flash fiction piece of 250 words MAKE us feel it! We want to connect with your character. This will be a challenge in 250 words.

There will be prizes, too.
On another strange note: Anything exciting happen to anyone this week? Like anyone's son spend $406.22 in one app on his iPhone? Oh wait, that was me. This is what I get for giving an 11 year old an iPhone. So, parents out there, take note - don't do what I did.

First Post of the Year - 2012

After going through several blogs this morning, I enjoyed seeing what everyone "plans" for 2012, be them resolutions or goals. Of course, I'd love to accomplish much this next year, but I'm not making any definite goals. I'll try to continue a healthy lifestyle and change my diet for the better. I'll try to write the best novel possible and finish the others I've already begun. I'll try many things this year, but I won't push myself to accomplish anything specific. I'll do my best and I'm happy with that.

I sure hope everyone accomplishes all they set out to do and I look forward to reading the wonderful, positive posts this year. I smile when I see a major accomplishment reached by my fellow bloggers and I know they would be equally happy to hear good news from me.

It's Almost New Years!

It's almost that time of year when people make resolutions and goals for the New Year. I've decided to join "Change Write Now" with some other wonderful bloggers and writers. It's about lifestyle change to bring healthy choices into your life. I've needed to make a few adjustments to my diet and now is as good a time as any. Today is the last day to sign up, so feel free to do so.

I've been horrible about blogging and reading other's blogs lately. I apologize. Moving into the new place has been exhausting, but that's an excuse and I hate excuses. I just haven't been on the PC at all. I need to fall into my old routine, which has been quite the challenge. I'll be better. Promise.

So, is anyone making some fabulous New Year's resolutions? Do tell. I love to hear them.

I'm Back!

Yes, it's been a grueling few weeks...full of moving, parties and family time. Do you know how frustrating it is to be without Internet at home for a few weeks? Well, maybe it hasn't been that long, but it sure feels like an eternity.

So, I'll be spending the weekend cozying up with my computer and reading through some blogs. If I miss one of your posts, please don't take it personally. I really do not think I'll get through all of them, but I plan to hit the most recent posts.

Hope everyone has been doing well. I've been plotting a new novel idea that I am excited about. It's a fresh concept that hasn't been done in YA, at least not that I've read. I love ideas like that. I've fallen behind on editing, but I hope to change that here soon as well. I also have some reading to get caught up on. That's always fun.

So, what's going on it your neck of the woods?

November is coming to an end. I am still alive, although extrememly busy. I'm behind in emails and blog posts. With Thanksgiving and the sweet sixteen party last week and moving this week, I'm going to be further behind....

Birth of a Novel Chain - Update

Top Five Reasons I will not finish NaNoWriMo:

5. The cold weather is bringing me down. Yes, cold weather in Florida may only consist of temperatures in the 70's, but it still counts as an excuse.
4. Breaking Dawn came out and the crazy people are messing with my flow.
3. I'm moving in less than two weeks (it doesn't matter that it's less than a mile away).
2. My daughter's sweet sixteen party is this Saturday and the planning, not to mention the expense, is wearing me down.
1. I received edits and I've shifted gears.

Ok, so really the only reason I stopped writing was the fact that I received my edits in and I may very well be writing the third, not the second book in the series. So, I had too much action in the first book, I knew this. My editor made some pretty profound comments and I'll be racking my brain trying to figure out how to start in on the rewrite.

This past week...hectic. Things I've learned:
1. Spending all that time writing an outline - a waste of time. My characters take the story in an entirely different direction.
2. The more I get into the story, the more I tend to rush. I LOVE action scenes, and I want to get my story out of my mind and on to the page, so I leave out all the great descriptions.
3. I must be a masochist. My poor characters are put through so much, I'm beginning to feel guilty, but it doesn't stop me from placing them in those situations.

Things I've Learned This Past Week...

Our public libraries don't host many author's any longer. I'm sure budget's are a controlling factor. So, I was surprised and delighted when my local library hosted the best selling YA author Ellen Hopkins last week. She visited as apart of her new book tour, so she wasn't paid by the library.

She was very personable and accommodating. I learned a lot from her, as well as the audience.

1. Her unique writing style (writing in verse) and her chosen topics really appeal/resonate with some, sending a much needed message.
2. Some people itch to reveal all aspects of their personal lives. They need/want to be heard - perhaps helping with the healing.
3. Writers/Authors must have excellent social skills.
4. It sometimes pays to be bold when seeking publication.
5. Most importantly, refreshments make author visits so much better.

I love my library!

The Third Campaigner Challenge is:

Tequila Beach

The palm fronds dance with the ocean breeze. Jana wrestles with the soft, lavender blanket on the shore. “Tell me again…why are we here?”

“Shh…you’re going to scare him away.” Rosa replies. Staggering forward, she trips over her own foot landing face first in the sand. “Dirt. Dirt. I ate dirt.” She spit it out, sticking her tongue out, wiping the brown mess with the back of her hand. “It’s a little salty. No worries, I saved the bottle.” The Tequila sloshes in the bottle as she waves it in the air.

“And you’re the one shushing me? Half of the island is awake now.” Jana crossed her arms, propping them up on her knees. “We could totally be dancing at the club right now.”

“Wastopaneer.” Rosa crawls behind the bushes.

“What?”

“Wait right here. Can’t you—” Rosa discharges the contents of her stomach. The breeze picks up and sweeps the smell forward.

“Of My God!” Jana waves her hand over her face. “What the hell did you eat?”

“Tacise.” Rosa slurs, tumbling back onto the blanket.

“What?”

“Tacos.” Rosa grins and looks to the north. “Did you hear that?”

Jana listens to the waves crashing. “I hear the ocean, not your make believe ghost.”

“Isn’t it pretty?” Rosa asks, staring at the sun waking on the horizon. A silver spark flashes through the sky.

“What was that?” Jana points to a silver floating object.

“I don’t know.” Rosa stands and stumbles forward, dropping the Tequila bottle on the blanket.

The circular object zooms forward, stopping above Rosa. “Synbatec!”

“What?”

“Son of a—” A beam shoots down, grabbing her, and sucks her up into the ship. It disappears through the clouds of the early morning sky.

Jana gulps the remaining Tequila. “Well, you don’t see that every day.”

Jennifer Synder's Blog: Jennifer is the self-published author of Shattered Soul and the novella Touch. She is a fairly new blogger and, like me, enjoys peanut butter on her pancakes. The thing I love most about Jennifer's blog is her sales posts and her features of other YA novelists.

The Word Is My Oyster: Lydia Kang has been blogging since 2010, around the same time I started. She is a wealth of knowledge, and if you aren't following her, you should be. Her author spotlights are wonderful and her Medical Mondays are informative and interesting. Did I mention she was a doctor?

The Bookshelf Muse: Anglea Ackerman of Alberta, Canada and Becca Puglisi of (Not sure she would want me to mention the city), Florida are the two wonderful muses that bring us the delightful posts at The Bookshelf Muse. Angela writes dark and mysterious middle grade and YA. Becca writes YA fantasy and historical and I had the pleasure of meeting her this past June. Did I mention how amazing their posts are? They take the time to bring new twists to character characteristics, emotions, and various other elements that are most helpful to other writers.

Pumpkin Patches and, Possibly, A Serial Killer...

So, this past weekend, I took my children to the refuge and then to a "pumpkin patch". Of course, a pumpkin patch in Florida is not the same as one up north. The picture to the left is when I took them when we lived in Indiana a few years ago. The pumpkins actually grew in that very field. This is one thing I miss in the north, perhaps the only thing.

But, before we made it to the wonderful southern pumpkin patch, we stopped by the wildlife refuge near it. I love to go early, a better chance to see the gators. So, we arrived before the volunteers, and a large, very tinted truck lingered around the opening of the refuge. It actually turned around and followed us to the marsh trail. Of course, I refused to get out of the car, especially since it would move and stop, move and stop, and then the person rolled down the very tinted windows, enough for him to see us, but not for us to see him. He moved on, realizing we weren't going to get out, and possibly discouraged there were three of us. When we left the marsh area, he had his truck hid at the entrance so he could see who entered, but they couldn't see him. I took his license plate down. He vanished when the volunteers showed up.

My imagination runs wild and I imagined him a serial killer looking for his next victim. He sure wasn't looking at the wildlife.

My Love of....

Walking on a path surrounded by bees and hornets. Watching an alligator cross your path to get into a canal, his strong tail moving his body along. Large, colorful grasshoppers emerging in the spring. Having a water moccasin slither in front of you unexpectedly.

These are all reasons I enjoy spending time at my area wildlife refuge. It's open and free, allowing the animals to be who they are meant to be, unlike the local zoo, keeping them trapped in cages. The zoo, of course, can bring us animals we wouldn't see otherwise, but there's something about seeing the animals in their natural habitat that puts a smile on my face.

A while ago, I went canoeing with a friend in said wildlife refuge. The canoe path is quite narrow, bringing you up close and personal with the alligators in their own territory. It probably didn't help being mating season. Sure, we got hissed at, warned to back away, and I'm steering the canoe as close as I possibly can to get a good shot with my camera. My friend refuses to go canoeing anymore with me. I'm thinking I need more loyal friends.

Nature inspires me. It relaxes me. What inspires you? Do you have a local refuge that allows the animals to be themselves? State parks?

Shattered Imago

I gripped the mirror, looking for fragments of similarities. Did the man I pretended to be exist? The man who pushed his children on the swing? In college, my son told me he wanted to become like me. Did he know? Did he see the truth and desire the same depraved pleasures?

Gone are the days of living behind a mask of deception, the perfect life: the empty abyss of a shell, a lacuna of the puzzle that will never be found.

“It’s time.” Death pounded on the door. The chains clang against the floor while we moved down the hall, a miasma rising in the air.

We passed the viewing room, filled with the oscitating lowlife, waiting for the show. The images in my dreams finally surfacing, a synchronicity of the exact moment I knew would come. A foretelling of the future I desired long ago.

A hum reverberated, replacing the shuffle and beeping. I shook my head, answering a question I didn’t hear. The curtain opened and the numerous victims’ families stared, their expressions meaningless. The choking, the dismemberment, the fear…all the wonderful memories flood to my mind. It was all worth the price. I nodded and grinned.

Overwhelming Sense of Being Overwhelmed

Have you ever wanted to do so many different things, you just didn't know where to start? Without trying to sound a bit on the selfish side (yes, I failed), here's an example of the never ending goals I set:

1. My children need to do well in school - which is a constant battle to stay on top of things (I'm a single parent, who has my children 100% of the time).
2. I have a full time job that demands 40+ hours a week of my time.
3. Started a publishing company with writing partner (more to come on that).
4. Written two novels that need extensive edits (tried working on both at once, will tone it down to finish one now).
5. Want to sign up for a Photoshop Cs5 class, Illustrator, Dreamweaver...
6. Bought an Ancient Mayan book that I plan to use to research new project.
7. Came up with awesome middle grade novel idea...really want to whip this one out.
8. I'm dieting...enough said.
9. Want to build my own website, for the publishing company, too.

I could go on forever with the things that I immediately want to do. Trust me, I could. My problem is not that I can't delegate, it's that I want the knowledge. I want to learn programs so I can make awesome book covers. I want to be able to build my own site and write my own books. I want to be able to learn self-editing to improve my writing skills (but I will be hiring an awesome editor to help me). I just want to be superwoman!

Anyone else with this problem, or am I the only person with Obsessive Superwoman Syndrome? I should seek therapy. This could be a wide spreading phenomenon.

Let's Talk About Fears....

When venturing around Downtown Disney last month, I encountered my first painted statue performer. Isn't the picture neat? You should have seen her slow movements when she changed positions. It amazes me to think about her standing in these various positions, covered in her performance "paint" for long hours under the blazing sun.

What drove her to this career path? Oh, the questions I wanted to ask her... What drives any of us to do what it is we do?

I write because I love it. I love putting the stories that swarm in my head down on paper, but.... I fear sharing these stories with others. I'm not experiencing anything that other writers haven't experienced. We all have fears, but it's important to face them. I know this. We all know this. Still, I have a tendency to put things off as long as possible. That's why my editing seems to be taking so long, I make excuses.

No worries. I'll get my first book out by the end of the year. It's a goal I've set, and my desire to accomplish my goals outweigh my fear.

So, what do you fear most?

The door swung open and Colby walked in, smiling.

Ana stiffened and tried to reach the call button for the nurse, but he grabbed it and threw it to the floor out of her reach.

“You think it’s going to be that easy?” he asked, leaning into her. She tried to push herself further into her pillow. “I could have given you everything. He gave you nothing, and now he’s not here to protect you any longer.”

He took the arrow necklace out of his pocket; the silver necklace she gave Matt for his birthday last week. Dried blood wound through the chain links. He dropped it on the white hospital bed sheet.

She grabbed it, closed her eyes and grasped it to her chest. Silent tears streamed down her face, but her damaged throat masked her whimpers.

“It didn’t have to be like this. You could have been so happy with me, and you threw it all away,” he whispered, she cringed. “All you had to do was say ‘yes’.”

He removed the pillow, and placed it over her head. “Let me help you get comfortable.”

The monitor flat lined. He walked from the room. The door swung shut.

Books, Books and More Books

How many people use Goodreads? I usually go on and update my read pile after I finish a book, but this morning I added twelve books that I have piled up waiting to be read. Surely, if I add them, I'll be pressured to read them more quickly, right?

Either I am a mood to write, or a mood to read. I have a hard time reading when I am writing a new story. Does anyone else have this problem or am I alone? I submerse myself in stories, but I have a hard time combining my love for reading and writing. If I'm reading, and I am a speed reader, I'll read four or five books a week, but I'm neglecting my own books.

On a lighter, more fun topic, Rach's Campaign kicks off today, and I look forward to getting to know some new author's better over the weekend. I'll stalk the twitter feeds and google+.

And..only because it's fresh on my mind, last night I dreamed I was being poked in the butt by my high school students, and I couldn't get them under control. I'm not even a teacher. I woke up exhausted. My dreams often do not make sense, and are quite bizarre. This one, however, is as normal as it gets. I could write a book on my wild and weird dream events.

What is going on with education?

Ok, I am veering away from the writing topic this week. My children started school today, and I am pleased to say I have no children in elementary school any longer. (I'm young at heart.)

Education is so important to me. I can't express this enough. I love learning and I want my children to find the joy in it as well. So...I may be a bit hard on them, but if I didn't push them, they wouldn't learn anything. Some of their teachers don't seem to care too much. She rarely had homework last year, and she made the honor roll.

Did you know my daughter can take PE online? Seriously...online! So, with her regular eight classes, I made her sign up for another one. I couldn't help it. I wanted to get her requirements out of the way so she can enroll in dual enrollment next year and earn college credits as well. I never had that opportunity in high school.

On a funnier note, my nephew's teacher only speaks Spanish. Yes, she will be learning English as she's teaching it to her students. My brother needed an interpreter for orientation. But...that is what he gets for living in Miami. I'm still laughing at this.

Vacation Rules!

Yes, I am back from a wonderful vacation. I've tried to catch up on blogs, but I know I've missed a lot of them and I haven't had the time to go through them all. I admit it...I marked them all as read.

Our vacation to Disney was wonderful. We stayed in an awesome hotel and were able to visit three of the parks. My feet were killing me, but it was well worth the pain. My children had a great time and it was worth the money to see them smiling and having the time of their lives.

I always say that when we die, the material things do not go with us. It's the memories that will be what is worth while. Some of my favorite memories involve traveling, although I am not a world traveler. What about you? What is the best place you've visited so far? Any great traveling stories?

Vacation! Vacation! Vacation!

Yes, I will be vacationing at this resort starting on Tuesday. I've been planning for over a month now, and really looking forward to getting away for a week.

It's important to take a break every now and then, especially from working and writing. I know the best advice in writing is to "write every day", but there are some days I feel can be better spent enjoying a great day with family.

I know my children are looking forward to going. It will be their last getaway before school starts, and I can't wait to see them smiling all day long. They are lucky to have such opportunities. I hope they realize how very fortunate they are to have vacations such as this.

So, yes, I will be gone from the blog for the next week and a half. I have a lot of preparations to tend to. I plan on returning to a couple of thousand posts to get caught up on, so be patient with me. I hope every one has a fabulous beginning of August. I will miss you!

My favorite posts to read have the personal touch to them. I love learning about others, and not just about the book they are writing or reading. People are fascinating, come from all different social economic backgrounds, and have different experiences. My mind is a sponge for useless knowledge. I can't remember the quadratic equation, but I will remember an interesting fact about someone.

I wrote a short article the other day about an event in my life that had an impact on me. It sparked a drastic change, and I am grateful the situation occurred, even if it did involve a decapitated child molester. I am sure we all remember a specific occurrence in our current lifetime that opened our horizons a little.

So, tell me something interesting about you. What strange event occurred that brought an epiphany about?

White Water Rafting

My children went white water rafting for the first time yesterday. They are on vacation with the grandparents, RVing it up the east coast. Since we live in south Florida, we don't have an opportunity to white water raft often.

No, this is not a picture of my children, but I am in there. It was a geology trip with the university I attended. We had a blast.

One thing I learned about white water rafting, is you either love it or hate it. You can have a good trip or a bad one, but if you don't venture down that river, you'll never know what would happen.

The writing journey is very much like that. You never know what would happen, if you don't venture forward. I believe that anything is possible, but in order to succeed, you need persistence. There will be bad times, but there will also be some really great rides.

First Page Critique - All Help Appreciated

First 250+/- Words:

Keera woke bound on the wooden floor of the carriage, lying at the feet of a man she had trusted. She felt as if someone had taken a club to her skull and her head throbbed. Confusion clouded her mind as she realized her arms and legs were hogtied behind her back; the gag covering her mouth muffled her protests. She glared at the man as he leered down at her.

The pain in Keera’s chaffed wrists intensified as she struggled to break free. Something soft pressed against her, and she curled her fingers into tight fists; she wasn’t the only person occupying the hard floor. She turned her head, straining to see her friend, Caleaha, unconscious beside her. Keera closed her eyes, defeated.

The constant bumpiness of the country road and the lack of the boisterous noise that plagued Alexan’s streets told Keera they were no longer in the city. Turning her concentration to the open window, she saw fresh pines. She imagined their scent, a contrast to the foul-smelling rag stuffed in her mouth by the swine sitting above them. A bitter taste lingered, reminding her of a coin she had once placed in her mouth to keep a schoolyard bully from taking it. The only sounds she heard were branches brushing against the creaking carriage and the clopping of the animals.

“Well, look who’s up,” Jekeil said. His wicked smile was outlined with thin lips. He pressed them together, making it difficult for her to read his expression. His black mustache matched the color of his hair that was tied in the back of his balding scalp. His lanky stature made him appear even more menacing.

Finishing Up!

This weekend, I've written two chapters. I am so close to finishing this draft, I can taste it. I only planned on writing twenty-seven chapters, but I'll have more. It amazes me how the characters take on a life of their own and direct things an entirely different way than I planned at the beginning.

I've also been listening to some wonderful dark classical music while I've been writing the last chapters. Now, I am not normally a music and write type, but it's been very inspiring imagining the scenes with the music.

For my fellow writers out there: Do you write while plugged in to music? If so, what type of tunes inspires you most? Do you find you listen to music that may set the mood to your scene? Do you listen to music you wouldn't normally listen to?

Structure and Partners!!

I am usually a very structured individual. Each week I set goals, and, usually, I will accomplish them, but lately, I've been clouded - absent-minded - stuck. If it wasn't for my wonderful critique partner, I'd be in limbo. She keeps me grounded on a daily basis.

For other writers out there, I can't stress the importance of finding that perfect partner to help you along your wonderful writing journey, whether it's to publish traditionally, or self-publish. Find a partner or group to consult. There are a lot of helpful writers in the blogging community, on twitter, or in groups, such as the Writer's Digest Forums or The Write-Brained Network. Find other's who write in your genre and form a lasting partnership.

Write each and every day!

Once Upon A Time....

There was a girl named ---- who had to change her name in order to protect her identity. Please excuse the absurdity while I try and figure out who I really am.

Does anyone watch swamp people? Apparently, it's a big deal down here in South Florida. I have people asking me if I've seen it. As I watched it for the first time, I had a hard time understanding what these guys were actually saying. Their accents made it sound as if they were slurring their words. I love it. I want to be able to talk like that. I'll practice.

The writing front has slowed this past week, but I make no excuses. There is no reason why I am unable to wake at 4:00am in order to get a couple of writing hours in, except pure laziness. I'll get back on track this week.

Saturday night was an interesting night. Good company, made new friends, and met a state trooper that made me laugh all night. Besides his unique “smacking the horse” dance technique to rock music, he had a little crush on one of my friends, who was probably pretty thankful she left when she did! He asked me if she would be interested in the “Brown Sugar”. I said, “Sure, she bakes chocolate chip cookies all the time.”

This week has been a very busy one. I was able to read a couple of books; one I helped edit for an amazing YA author. I also wrote a few new chapters on my current WIP. It's been developing nicely.

I've also read some great news on blogs regarding some other great authors this week. I believe a couple now have an agent. This is always great news. I love reading positive posts. It gives other inspiring authors encouragement and hope.

So, what is on your reading list this week? (It's not easy to refrain from reading while I write, so I've been reading The Soulkeepers by G.P.Ching. It's great so far, and I am only 100 pages in. Love it!)

Weekly Writing Update #9

This weekend was not a productive writing one, but I had a blast with my family. Yes, my toe is broken, which I refuse to do anything about. Yes, I am burnt beyond belief, and I will be in pain for the next few days. Yes, my arms are sore, because I held on a little too tight to Big Bertha (the tube being pulled by the boat on the lake). It was all worth it. The memories will be with me forever.

Even though I spent a couple of days playing around, I did get a lot of writing completed this past week. I am on target to finish this draft by the middle of June.

Writing Update #8

It's been a hectic week. I've visited some wonderful friends, and spent a lot of time with family. I feel like I need a retreat to get back into the swing of things.

I hope everyone has had a fantastic week, and if you celebrate Easter, I hope it was a great one for you.

I am about to write a dream scene in my WIP. It's been lingering on my mind for a week. I only want it to be a glimpse, but a vivid one. It should be interesting to see how it develops. I am still on track with completing two chapters per week. I did, however, read a book over the weekend, when I promised I would no longer read until I was completed with my current novel. I just couldn't help myself.

Writing Update #7

I've been reading some great blog posts lately. I'm enjoying the A-Z posts on various blogs, and I especially enjoy reading what other authors are currently working on.

I think it's so important to encourage other's in their endeavors. I get excited to hear about the great news some authors post (they've found an agent, sold a book, decided to self-publish, seeing pictures of book signings).

What impresses me most is their determination. It's heartening to see them not discouraged by the negative aspect of writing, and the negatives exist.

My fantasy has been moving along well. My characters have been developing nicely, and I am amazed at the direction the novel is taking. I've ventured from the outline, but I don't mind. Have you ever found your novel deviating from the original course?

Writing Update #6

This weekend has been full of family get-togethers and a lot of time away from the computer. I feel as if I have neglected my novel, but I know family time is important and I can't go on ignoring my family, even though that was my plan.

Aside from that, I am on track with my goals on the fantasy novel. I enjoy hearing what my partner has to say each week when she reads my newest chapters. I've also been enjoying my character development in the novel. I find my characters deviating from the original course. Don't you love it when that happens?

I hope everyone else is doing well. I've enjoyed reading the enormous amount of posts lately, although I haven't commented on all of them. Is everyone else finding it difficult to find time to read mainstream fiction? I've been reading the same book for weeks now and it seems like it's going so slow. Then again, I have been reading/proofing friends books in there as well.

Writing Update #5

Current Project: What am I not doing? It's been a busy week, but I was able to get a lot done on my current WIP, "Therianthrope". Yes, I found the name for my book, after leaving it "Untitled" for nine months now. I've written eight solid chapters, but there is still a long way to go. It's flowing nicely and I am pleased with where it's headed.

Inspiration: I draw inspiration from a variety of places. I was inspired by a few fellow authors this week, immersing myself in a new project that I am very excited about.

Note: I've been playing around with my blog lately. I've added a header, a product completed by the talented Shelley HW. She has completed some fabulous book covers. Stop by and check out her site. I also learned how to add tabs on the blog. One of them lists some other fabulous authors. If you'd like me to put a link to your blog on there, just leave me a comment and I'll add you. Weekly Writing Update #4

Current Projects: I will be completing chapters 3 and 4 of my YA fantasy this week (when I mention complete, I mean finished - never to be touched again). Since I started a new job this week, my writing time will be limited. I plan to ignore all family members for the remainder of the year.

Inspiration: Other authors. I am so inspired by my fellow authors. I love seeing success stories and it makes me happy when something wonderful happens for them. Thanks to them, I've set deadlines, I've made commitments and I plan to stick to each and every one. From now on, you may call me Superwoman!

I want to thank Trisha Leaver for this award and her very kind words. She is a wonderful author and I look forward to reading more of her books and seeing her on the shelves in the future.

1. I use an old photo on my blog because I like to pretend I still look like that.
2. I was born and raised in Florida and hated every minute of the six years I lived in Indiana while I had attended college.
3. I really dislike talking on the phone for too long and often try to cut the conversations short (not because I don't love the people I am talking with).

Current Projects: Still working on my fantasy. I also completed one short story this past week, derived from a dream. I love those dreams that inspire us.

Current Projects: Working on my fantasy. Completed the re-write of the first chapter and started in on the second. Also wrote one flash fiction at a writer's meeting a little over a week ago.

Inspiration: The weather down here has been fantastic! Feel free to be jealous. I know the northern states have had a rough winter, but down here, the weather hasn't been better.

Weekly Writing Update #1

Current projects: I have decided to pick up and work on the fantasy novel I started last year. My historical novel is shelved, at the moment.

Inspiration: Last week, I dreamed the first line of my MS. I woke, remembered the line, along with a few others, and went directly to my computer. It sparked my creativity.

Here is the first line: The first person Miranda killed was her sister.

Now, if all my other sentences came to me in such a way, things would be great. I am in the process of re-writing the first chapter. I wanted to pack a punch right away, start from a different place. Draw the readers in. Isn't that what all great writers do?

Commentary: I haven't tried my hand at poetry since high school, but I was inspired. The kids at the school in which I teach are wonderful and perfect. They are unique and a pleasure to be around. Some do not see them as I do. I want to see them succeed and be happy. They just have circumstances that may be more difficult to overcome. I have faith that these kids will have a future. Their one opportunity is an education and the more teachers that care, the better chance they will have in succeeding. Sometimes, they just need to know someone cares.

The details mentioned in this poem are accurate, nothing has been embellished. I pray everyday these kids take advantage of their opportunity and avoid that one fatal mistake.

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished. I was editing my historical novel, but I've ceased at the moment. I have written one short flash fiction piece and one poem this week.

My current problem(s): I am not happy with my completed novel. I am thinking about a complete rewrite that will take a very long time to finish. My CP's have been wonderful in helping with the edits.

My question this week: While I was at school today, my students in the classroom inspired me to write a poem about them. This is the 2nd time this week that they have inspired me to write. What inspires you?

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished. I am editing my historical novel at present, currently working on chapters 2 & 3. It's a slow process. My goal is to polish this novel within the next two months to perfection.

My current problem(s): I am having a hard time finding the time to work on my novel with school being back in. I am covering for a teacher that will be back on Feb. 6th. I am trying to get into the grove of things and trying to find the best time of day where I can sit at my computer with no interruptions. This is not an easy task.

My question this week: I've read a lot lately on self-publishing versus traditional publishing. I am considering taking the self-publishing route without even considering the traditional method. Then again, it may be a good lesson to try the traditional path at least once. What do you think? Self-publishing or Traditional? What is your stance and why?

My Thoughts:
Wow! I really enjoyed reading Delirium. I've read mixed reviews on this book, but I thought the story was well told. The way Lauren Oliver weaved "Love" into a disease was brilliant. She put a lot of thought into this novel and I look forward to the next installment. I am dying to know how Lena fairs in the "Wilds". The ending brought tears to my eyes, which says a lot about the characterization in the story. I would recommend this novel to anyone.

Please welcome author Lorelei Bell. Lorelei is an author of vampire fiction and resides in DeKalb, Illinois with her husband. Vampire Ascending is her second published book.

Can you tell my readers a little about Vampire Ascending?
Vampire Ascending is a mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance about a Touch Clairvoyant who is hired by a powerful vampire magnate of Chicago to reveal who is killing vampires in his ultra modern vampire stronghold/hotel.

I wanted to give readers a quirky but likable female protagonist to root for, even worry for when she begins a strange job with vampires in a city, and is subjected to dangerous situations at every turn, some involve scheming vampires, romantic trysts with vampires and shiftchangers. I wanted to write a book where you have no idea where things will go next, and I plan on building on this in the next two books with Sabrina learning more about her new powers as a sibyl.

Why are you interested in vampire novels?
When I was a teenager, I watched all the horror flicks, but Dracula was my favorite. I would watch every vampire movie that came on TV. They always disappointed me because Dracula was painted as the evil villain. I wanted him to be the hero and get the girl.

Now, with the vampire novel shaking off the “horror” label and finding its own niche, it's nice we have finally made vampires heroes, villains and lovers. With my books I wanted to throw them all at you. Vampires could be all of the above, they have feelings, they aren't all cold-blooded killers—although I wouldn't trust a few of them--and I try to make that clear. I'm developing Sabrina as a sibyl who basically is the check and balance of all supernatural evil that walks the earth, not only vampires, but demons, Fallen Angels and their off-spring, Nephilim.

When did you decide you wanted to become a published author?
When I took a creative writing course in high school, and then in college. I found I was rather demented about it, staying up at strange hours writing my fantasies down. I didn't know what I was doing back then, but it was helping me hone my writing abilities.

What made you decide to self-publish?
A long story, but I'll shorten it here: Rejections. 30 years of them. Wouldn't that convince even the thickest skinned writer?

Will you be looking into creating ebooks?
There will be an eBook made of Vampire Ascending and it should be available for the kindle through Amazon this Friday.

What are you currently working on and what do you plan to do next?
The next two books in the series. Vampire's Trill is the second book, where Sabrina learns more about becoming a sibyl, her new powers, and introducing more characters, her love interests, as well as having her go to other worlds and have more adventures.

I hope to get edits done eventuality. Going slowly, and since I work—who doesn't—at a job, I'm seeing probably no sooner than late spring for that one.

The third book is being written as we speak. I've got just over one hundred pages of that going. I'm a layering type of writer—I go back and fiddle with what I've written constantly. I think it's some sort of obsessive compulsive thing with me. I'm just always needing to re-adjust things.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading Stone Kissed. It was refreshing to read a novel with an interesting twist, a witch with an unusual power of communicating with stone figures. Delia and Grant are characters that are both strong and meant for one another. I was pleased Grant didn't wander, as some men tend to do in other romance novels. He stayed true to Delia, which made me like him all the more. I would recommend Stone Kissed to paranormal romance lovers.

My Thoughts:
This was a very quick read and I enjoyed the unfolding of Shirley Duke's tale. I kept reading because I was intrigued about how the ending would play out. I highly recommend this book for ages 11-13, although it is suggested for ages 11-18. This is a great book to get those youngsters who have a hard time reading longer length novels. I plan to introduce my ten year old son to this series as he enjoys reading the Goosebump books.

My Thoughts:
Honestly, I couldn't put Unearthly down. Clara's story captivated me from the beginning. I know it's not an easy task to write first person, current tense, but Cynthia does it well. I look forward to her next novel and I hope she continues with the same writing style. The book contained amazing characterization and that is what prompted me to finish the book in one sitting. Angels are big with YA authors now, but I would recommend Unearthly before any of the others I've read thus far.

My Thoughts:
I have had a morbid fascination with vampires since I was a little girl (who hasn't?). I enjoy reading various vampire authors and I look forward to seeing how they develop their characters. I enjoyed reading about Rhys and Viviane. I enjoyed the story and how it flipped back and forth between 1785 and present day. Michele Hauf weaved the old tale of Viviane, Rhys and Constantine slowly throughout the book, answering a lot of questions along the way. I didn't expect the book to end as it did (I won't go into specifics), but I look forward to reading further. I will read "Forever Vampire" and see how Vail's story unfolds. I recommend this book to vampire lovers. I know they will appreciate the historical aspect as well as the love story.

My thoughts:
Wow! I read this book within one day. I knew several species were endangered, but I didn't know the impact this had on our environment. I connected with this book in a way it's difficult to relay in words. As my readers know, I love taking nature pictures, and Jeff Corwin talked about the Florida Panther as well as the American Alligator, which hit home. I didn't realize the substantial impact Global Warming, pollution and poaching all play with the decline of some animal species. In the back of my mind, I knew some of these things to be true, but as most people do, I didn't understand the importance of such issues.

I also enjoyed reading about the adventures Jeff Corwin undertook with some of these wonderful animals. I felt his joy and concern within the book. You will learn about some species that are already extinct as well as some that may be extinct in a very short time. It makes me want to travel and see some of these magnificent creatures before the chance is gone. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I wish more people understood the importance animals play in our lives, even when we do not realize it.

Weekly Update: First Week of November 2010!

Well, it's been a long week and I have completed about 17,000+ words on the NaNoWriMo challenge. But....I am feeling a little discouraged at this point. I am not entirely happy with the content of my writing. I suppose this is normal, trying to punch out a novel this quickly.

Without harping on the negative, I did take a side trip yesterday to the Wildlife Refuge and snapped some great pictures. This little fella (8-9 feet) was perched on the path sunning himself. So, I got a little close to a creature that could have perhaps run me down, but we had an agreement. You see, I am one with nature and he agreed not to harm me while I snapped some fairly close pictures.

I also ran into a moccasin crossing my path, but he wasn't so accommodating with the pictures. The moccasin was HUGE and I really am upset I couldn't get a good picture of him.

I hope everyone is having a productive week. Let me know if you are in the NaNoWriMo challenge and how you are doing. How are your novel ideas shaping up? Anyone feeling there writing is as crappy as mine?

Yes, it's that time of year. Blogs will go unread, posts will go unwritten and my children may go unfed, but I will get 50,000 words written in 30 days!

I've been reading some helpful posts in preparation of NaNoWriMo. I just downloaded the windows beta version of Scrivener and plan on playing with it over the weekend. My outline for my untitled fantasy novel is finished and I know what I plan to write in each and every chapter.

My thoughts:
I've always had a fascination with marine wildlife and mythological creatures that may lurk in the oceans off the coast. Living near the Atlantic, I've even pretended to be the elusive mermaid in my youth. I enjoyed reading L.K. Madigan's mermaid tale and I look forward to reading future tales of Lena, if and when her story continues. I would recommend this book to those interested in reading about magical tales of the mer-people. I also love this cover!

Weekly Update!

I vowed to write on this blog on a weekly basis, but this week I feel like this lonely flower. My petals are pointed down.

It's been a busy week. The beach with a bunch of teenagers on Friday, an all day band competition on Saturday and the library on Sunday. This week is looking just as busy... a football game on Thursday night, another all day band competition on Saturday and a wonderful writers meeting on Wednesday night (looking forward to that!).

I've written nothing this week, but I have been reading quite a bit. Romance, Historical YA, and, of course, classic literature. (Still studying for my teaching test.)

Where I am in the writing process: Stalled. I am studying for a teachers exam so I can teach full time. I haven't written anything all week, which is really depressing. I still plan on completing the NaNoWriMo. If anyone else is in it this year, feel free to buddy me here.

My current problem(s): Wanting to get back into my WIP, as well as my completed MS. I am itching to go back and re-write/edit my first historical novel. Of course, I have other priorities that seem to be holding me back at the moment. Oh, and I am dieting and as cranky as all heck!!

Question of the week: What do you do to motivate yourself to keep writing, even when other things pop up that may be a distraction? Get up earlier? Take a vacation away from the distraction? (I wish!)

Picture of the week: I love rainbows, but so rarely get a chance to snap them. This was taken in my backyard. I am hoping to get over that rainbow someday.

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished. Still working on my second novel and wishing I had more time to write. I am also registered for NaNoWriMo this year (it's my first). If anyone else is in it this year, feel free to buddy me here. Should be interesting, since I can't find time now.

My current problem(s): My daughter's practice schedule. She practices six days a week, including all day Saturday. It's driving me batty. I still can't seem to bring myself out of bed during the quiet moments of the wee morning hours. I thought it would be nice to get up around 3am so I could have time to myself without a peep in the house, but my body is not cooperating. I'll get there.

Question of the week: I recently downloaded a writing program, hoping it would organize my outline and it totally sucked. I am not sure I need a writing program to help me, but I was hoping. I'll stick to my composition books, but is anyone else using a special writing program/software/tool they find helpful?

Picture of the week: You would have peed your pants watching me chase down this land turtle as I pulled off the road. This gopher tortoise is one of only four land turtles in Florida. Florida Gopher Tortoise can be up to 40 feet in length and 10 feet in depth. I named him Speedy, because believe it or not he was pretty fast trying to run from me.

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished. Working on my second novel. September's YA Flash Death Match winner for my latest short story.

My current problem(s): Wanting to edit my first chapters to make the story better, but not being motivated to do so. I love my story and want to continue with the next chapter, but I have been writing a lot of short stories lately. Ideas pop into my head all of the time. I haven't found a dedicated writing schedule since the kids have been back in school either. They are taking more of my time this year than the last.

My question of the week: What do you do to stay motivated? What do you do to stay on track with a project?

Picture of the week: If you may not have known, I love taking pictures of snakes. This snake crawled into the front of our camper and didn't want to come out because I was sitting there waiting. He eventually did and he was a good four feet long (but skinny). He kept popping his head out to peak at me.

YA Flash Death Match Entry

Please stop by YA Flash Death Match and vote for your favorite camping story from Monday, September 20th through Sunday, September 26th. I wrote two camping stories this week and this is the one that went over well with the high school students.

By The Moonlight by J.L. Jackson

Sadie moped around the campground loop. Instead of spending the summer at the beach with her friends, she was stuck on her parent’s planned three week camping excursion up the east coast.

The tall pines reminded Sadie of Christmas, with the needles smelling like the candles her mother burned two weeks each year. The sun escaped the western sky as twilight approached. The cricket’s loud racket softened and the fireflies emerged in search of love.

Her parents had chosen the least inhabited park, with not one camper in sight. Dwelling on the miserable circumstances of her ruined summer, she didn’t notice the dark figure emerge from the trail to the dock. He smacked right into her.

“Oh, sorry.” The automatic apology materialized from Sadie’s lips.

“Hi.” The startled stranger spoke.

Sadie’s eyes scanned the stranger’s shoeless feet before reaching his shirtless, sculpted chest. Her mouth fell open while she lingered too long on his bulging muscles, unable to form an intelligent reply. He laughed at her expression.

She blurted out a delayed response, as she focused on his face. “Hi!”

His smile brought dimples to his cheeks. His black hair hung over his left eyebrow and a small crescent scar under his mouth interrupted his perfectly tanned complexion. He looked like a contemporary Tarzan.

“Nice night for a walk, isn’t it?” His manner of speech reminded Sadie of an old black and white film where the men dressed in suits and hats for their nightly stroll, but this man’s Tarzan attire didn’t fit her mental picture.

“I guess.” Sadie felt like smacking herself upside the head.

“I’m Randy.” He held his hand out for Sadie to shake, which made her a little uncomfortable.

“Sadie.” She wondered if a chimp would jump on his shoulder. She imagined him swinging from vines through the trees.

“That’s a very nice name. Sadie, would you like to walk down the river trail with me?”

She nodded, unable to speak. Randy looked to be a few years older than Sadie, perhaps 18 or 19. She wished she had worn her hair down or put on a little makeup.

Sadie followed Randy along the river trail, with the full moon lighting their way. She carefully avoided the tree roots, while Randy held the branches for her to pass unscathed. The trail narrowed following the canal to the west.

An animal croaked. “Did you hear that?” Randy asked.

“The frog?”

He laughed. “No, the gator. They sometimes grunt like that.”

Sadie felt Randy’s breath on her neck as they neared a small patch of sand at the water’s edge. “It was an alligator?” she stuttered.

He nodded. “Sure was.”

“How do you know?” It sounded like a frog to Sadie.

“Oh, I just know these parts real well.” Randy sat down on the sand patting the place next to him for Sadie.

“It sure is beautiful by the moonlight.” Sadie remarked. The breeze shook the palms, as the rippling water lapped onto the sand. She plopped down next to Randy.

The hours flew by, as Randy told her about the wildlife on the river. He talked about the gators during mating season. He told her of the few otters that could be spotted from time-to-time and of the osprey that nested in the tall dead trees. His smile never faded.

Sadie realized her parents would be livid when she returned after being gone for such a long time. She bounced up, shaking the sand from her clothes. “Randy, I have to get back.”

“So soon?” Randy rose. “Don’t you want to swim?”

“Swim? In alligator-infested waters?”

“Don’t you have a sense of adventure?” His eyebrows arched the challenge.

“It’s real late and my parents will worry.” Sadie started for the trail leading back. “Will I see you tomorrow?”

Randy’s smile disappeared. “I hope so Sadie.” He approached her, placed his hands on her shoulders, and bent down to kiss her. The passion in the kiss caused butterflies in her stomach. Not wishing to ruin the moment with words, Sadie dashed down the trail, leaving Randy by the river.

The next morning, Sadie’s parents restricted her from walking around the campground, insisting she accompany them on a river cruise. Sadie wondered all morning if Randy was waiting by the river.

The flat-bottomed boat barreled through the river, as the ranger pointing out the cypress, oak and various wildlife along the way. After an hour, the boat docked at a camp that consisted of two cabins and a pole barn. A life-sized picture of Randy with a boa draped around his neck, still without his shoes or shirt, greeted them.

Sadie’s heart raced with excitement. She smiled in anticipation, hoping Randy would be at the camp. It had never occurred to her that he lived at the park. She jumped off the boat and sprinted up the steep embankment.

Her parents and the ranger entered the camp and the ranger continued his commentary. “Trapper Randy’s family sold his land to the state after his death. His death still remains a mystery. Although the coroner ruled it a suicide, some suspect murder.” The ranger pointed to a spot on the sand surrounding the pole barn. “A neighbor discovered his body right there.”

Where I am in the writing process: I have written 3 short stories this week. Time has been a problem, but I was able to squeeze a little writing in. I will be posting a short story later on the blog, entering it in the YA Flash Death Match competition. I actually wrote two different stories based on the criteria, but one went over better with the students in a few of my classes. They are, afterall, the right audience. If you have time this week, check out the YA Flash Death Match website and vote on the best story.

My current problem(s): My daughter. Open house, practices, football games and, today, a mini-boot camp and fundraiser. I need a clone! It's been hectic, but I am surviving. As soon as my daughter graduates from high school, my son enters, so I am looking at possibly 8 years of this hectic schedule.

Question of the week: Would anyone like to adopt one of my children? Yes, I am kidding. I really feel for parents trying to write while their children are young. It makes me appreciate the ones who are published. Who is your favorite current author that has accomplished publication while having young children?

Where I am in the writing process: Unpublished, of course. I am developing my writing skills with each draft. I am learning from some great authors. I hope my improvements will show in my current WIP.

My current problem(s): Since I am still developing, I am no where ready to try and publish. I edit, read, write, edit, read, write. It's a endless cycle.

Question of the week: Who's writing has inspired you? It could be a classic or perhaps a modern day author. I am interested in knowing what has inspired you!

My picture: Some time ago, my children and I were walking downtown Indianapolis and, on this particular day, a foundation placed dead soldiers boots around the memorial. It makes me think about the men and women who gave their lives. We all remember what happened September 11.
